Josh's Blog
By Josh Weidmann on Monday, January 29, 2007 9:16 PM

Yesterday I took a friend to the airport.

You know how there are those people that God puts in your life and you know they are there for a purpose, but you’re not sure exactly what that purpose is? Yeah, he is that kind of friend.

I love him and admire him more than He will ever know. He carries a weight in my life that goes far beyond what he does. His place in my life is special because I know God has sent him here… or me here to be with him. Nonetheless, our conversations are always challenging and require a few days of processing after they are done.

Here’s something he said that I’ve been mulling over the last 24 hours; “Josh, strive to be a trusted source of spiritual nourishment.” It was a passing comment but one with eternal consequence.

I don’t want to just be ‘the young guy who can preach.’ I want to be the guy who can preach, but not for the purpose of preaching well or being acclaimed as a gifted communicator. I want to be a man of god who is has a tap into the living streams of waters (Psalm 1) and will be a trusted and reliable source of spiritual nourishment every time someone comes to this well.

This means my life has to preach. Just like my friend’s.

That is me in the bear costume.

I gave the guy on the right the gift of being a "Happy Birthday Bear" at his office birhtday party a few weeks ago.

Just laugh and don't ask.

I wrote my own obituary to remind me life is fleeting. Here is what I hope my obituary to read:

Joshua Michael Weidmann was born in Abilene, Texas to Jim and Janet Weidmann on February 23, 1982. He lived a life of commitment and service to Jesus Christ. Joshua was raised in Colorado and moved to Chicago, Illinois to attend Moody Bible Institute, and serve at Harvest Bible Chapel for several years. He then returned to Colorado with his beautiful and godly wife where he raised four amazing children. He finished a long life of service to the Lord preaching and writing the message of Christ. He died in his pulpit last Sunday, April 16, 2062, while preaching on Philippians 1:21, “To live is Christ and to die is gain.”

This city is honest. Raw and unrefined.

As I walked from the train station to school today, I recalled how Chicago has no inhibitions. It does what it does whenever it wants to do it.

The weather always set to a temperature undesired by any of it occupants.

The wind never stops to ask if you are doing okay.

The people act and dress as the wish, not mindful of anyone around.

Chaos is the pattern of life and no one ever tells it is “get in line” or act a certain way.

Some buildings stand firm while others are crumbling as they strive to weather the storm.

And me – well, I just walk and observe every quirky action of the people around me and the cracks in the concrete beneath me. And I think about the ways I am like this city. I too am often unpredictable, sometimes uninviting and always could use a good cleaning or repair. But alike the city, perhaps I’m scared it would cost too much and take too long to clean ever gutter and alley. Or even more afraid it would change what has always just been.
